Canyon involved: Jump Trip (Lower)
Region: California Sierras
Country: United States

Injury: Soft Tissue (bruising)
Cause: Communication error, Jumping error

Description of Event: Two people jumped the first falls and hit a submerged rock with ankle and knee injuries. The people jumping could not see the landing spot. The people below were warning them to avoid a rock on the right but without good visuals the jumpers overshot the landing spot.

Analysis: Jumping accidents are common, and can result in severe injuries. Safe jumping requires teamwork: the group should send at least one person down first—on rope if necessary—to check the landing zone for hazards. Good communication and sometimes spotting is required for the rest of the group to jump.
