Injury: Abrasion or Laceration, Sprain or strain.
Cause: Rappel error
Description of Event: A group of three canyoneers attempted to descend Hades Canyon, well-prepared with research and gear. One of the canyoneers lost control of his descent while rappelling and fell 40 feet. His two teammates assessed his injuries, and the group decided they were sufficient to prevent him from hiking out on his own. They left him with sufficient supplies for an overnight stay and continued to move down-canyon. After an overnight bivouac, the two completed the canyon and were able to call for rescue the next morning.
Analysis: Fortunately, this team was prepared to spend the night in the canyon. Consider carrying an emergency signaling device such as a personal locator beacon and/or satellite messenger.
